Inspired by Dave Matthews 914ce, the DMSM is an Indian rosewood/Sitka spruce Grand Auditorium. A custom fretboard inlay blends elements of the popular "Cindy" inlay, which graces Matthews 914ce, with a design that pays tribute to the band's longtime sax player, LeRoi Moore, who passed away in 2008. Based on a sketch that Matthews provided, a crown inlay between the 11th and 12th frets honors Moore, incorporating ball-tipped points with one ball partially missing in his memory. A nickname of Moore's within the band, "Grux" is inlaid between the 13th and 18th frets. The headstock inlay also was developed from a sketch by Matthews. This is a 1980 Gurian 3H-S3R. Gurian Guitars was a manufacturer of high quality acoustic guitars based in New York City, then Hinsdale, New Hampshire and finally West Swanzey, New Hampshire, from the 1960s to 1981. The guitars were designed by luthier Michael Gurian who also supervised production. The company was one of the earliest "boutique" guitar brands in the United States, offering an alternative product to those of the larger, factory-based makers of the day, with instruments characterized by a distinctive shape, features and sound. The S3R is a mid-sized instrument with plenty of power, brilliance and sustain. This size is quite versatile, an excellent choice for solo or accompaniment. The Size 3 model has become a favorite for recording work thanks to it's balanced tone. This full custom BTO Grand Auditorium was ordered by us at our last visit to the Taylor factory. The Macassar Ebony back and sides were hand picked by me from the Taylor premium stack, as was this amazing piece of Sinker Redwood. As you can see the results are gorgeous but as good as this guitar looks it's the tone that will win you over. This instrument is as responsive as an acoustic can get but it has enough headroom to take the most aggressive strumming you can throw at it. The tone is rich and balanced with plenty of projection.
