The 556ce features mahogany back and sides with a top of Lutz spruce, a natural hybrid of Sitka and White spruce that resembles Adirondack spruce in its robust tonal output. The wood combo, together with the Grand Symphony body and Taylor’s internal Performance bracing, will yield a wonderfully balanced 12-string voice that blends tonal power, depth and articulation into a dynamic package that’s equally responsive to a light or lively strumming attack. This full custom BTO Grand Auditorium was ordered by us at our last visit to the Taylor factory. The Macassar Ebony back and sides were hand picked by me from the Taylor premium stack, as was this amazing piece of Sinker Redwood. As you can see the results are gorgeous but as good as this guitar looks it's the tone that will win you over. This instrument is as responsive as an acoustic can get but it has enough headroom to take the most aggressive strumming you can throw at it. The tone is rich and balanced with plenty of projection. This limited edition 12-fret Grand Auditorium showcases those same top-tier aesthetic virtues with the breathtaking pairing of striped West African ebony, sourced from Taylor’s Crelicam ebony mill in Cameroon, with richly variegated sinker redwood. The tight-grained redwood tops were sliced from old-growth logs reclaimed from the bottom of a California river, whose mineral-rich river bed infused the wood with an array of color hues. Sonically, redwood blends the warm overtone complexity of cedar with the attacking power of spruce, while ebony yields some of rosewood’s bell-like fidelity but with the more linear output of maple. The magic here is in the fusion of these tonal nuances with a 12-fret Grand Auditorium body. Players can expect a warm, balanced response that packs an extra punch with the help of the redwood top and the 12-fret’s shifted bridge location.
