In 1933, Martin made, at the request of the then famous country & western star Gene Autry, its first D-45. Perhaps, the most famous '45 ever made, it now stands in the Autry Western heritage Museum in CA. In 1994, Martin released a very successful limited replica edition. Like the original, features a 12 fret neck with slotted peghead. The label is signed by both Gene Autry and C.F. Martin IV and numbers the guitar as 30 out of 66 made. There were 2 versions, one with the signature at the 12th fret and the other with original bold signature along the length of the fingerboard, which is what we have here. The double cutaway Starfire series was introduced in late 1963 beginning with the Starfire IV and Starfire V. The Starfire VI followed in 1964. These guitars were made to capture part of the market that was almost exclusively enjoyed by the Gibson ES series guitars. Like the Gibson ES-335, the Starfire IV has a center block of wood that runs from the neck to the tail and is glued to the top and back. This reduces feedback and increases sustain.
